Maryland's Eastern Shore is known for poultry production, a massive industry which, according to the Delmarva Poultry Industry, accounted for 40% of the state's cash farm income in 2008. Sales from dairy and beef cattle also make up a reasonable percentage of cash receipts for the state. Farmers in the region who opt to raise less common types of animals do so, in part, because it distinguishes them from the herd, while also offering environmentally friendly alternatives to traditional livestock. Dixon House, once a dream of some charitable women in the community in 1889, has been an important part of the fabric of Easton, having provided independent and assisted living for the aged for 100 years. The home, located at 108 North Higgins Street in Easton, was envisioned to be a pleasant home where senior ladies could live in comfort and privacy – still landmark qualities of The Dixon House today. On August 22, one street in downtown Easton will be transformed into a dining hall, of sorts. In conjunction with Easton’s 300th anniversary, there will be a free community dinner served from 3 to 7 p.m. to anyone who would like to sit with friends and neighbors and break bread (and pasta, and salad). Enjoy nature and wildlife scenery when walking near shores, wetlands, marshes, ponds, meadows and woodlands. Remember to leave only footprints and take only memories.
